Drummond's life 10 - bibliography

A wide range of primary and secondary sources were used in the preparation of this thesis. To assist the reader, the references listed in the bibliography have been partially divided on a subject basis. This approach was made easier by the pattern of David Drummond's life: it was wide ranging, but also fell within a number of well defined areas. Nonetheless, some references did span more than one sector. For that reason, other sections should be cross checked for possible references.

Both Drummond and his major colleagues, particularly Page, kept a wide range of personal papers. In addition, detailed records survive for a number of the organisations in which Drummond was involved. These major collections, spread across a number of institutions, constitute a very important historical resource. In the time available, it proved impossible to do more than sample some of the sources.

1. PRIVATE PAPERS OF DAVID DRUMMOND AND THE DRUMMOND FAMILY.

The majority of David Drummond's private papers are held by the University of New England Archives. They are broken up into some 35 boxes, two volumes of ministerial minutes to his Department, plus two volumes of press clippings covering his period as minister. They are an invaluable source on Drummond and his various activities. A shelf list is available.

Other of Drummond's papers are held by his daughters and by the author. The biggest collection is in the author's hands; it includes several thousand letters, Drummond's manuscript autobiography, (referred to in footnotes as DM), a taped interview plus transcript (referred to in footnotes as (Interview Transcript), and a collection of photographs. In addition to Drummond's own papers, the family holds a collection of papers from past generations of the family. The collections in family hands are referred to in footnotes as Family Papers (FP).

In addition, the author drew from the many discussions held with Drummond in the years immediately prior to his death in 1965.

5. NEWSPAPERS AND PERIODICALS

This section lists newspapers and periodicals cited in the thesis. It is broken into two sections, depending upon how often the newspaper or periodical has been cited. In addition to the newspaper files themselves, references have been drawn from the two volumes of Drummond's press clippings and from clippings found in other collections of private papers. Where a reference has been taken from a secondary source and not checked against the original, the secondary source is cited.

For those interested in Northern history, the large number of newspapers makes choices difficult. The Sydney papers are important because of their reporting of government activities. Outside them, the exact choice will depend upon the purpose of the study. For the nineteenth century, a good starting point would be the Maitland Mercury, the Armidale Express and the Clarence and Richmond Examiner; all three papers were founded early in the period after white settlement. For the twentieth century, see the Associated Northern Dailies (Northern Daily Leader, Murwillumbah-Tweed Daily, Daily Examiner, Northern Star and the Maitland Mercury) and the Newcastle Morning Herald.

7. HISTORY OF NORTHERN NEW SOUTH WALES

The history of Northern New South Wales has yet to be written. This section gives a partial list of references relating to the history of the area. It should be used in conjunction with the next section (Political Activity: The Country Movements).

Those interested in the history of the area should consult Greenwood's bibliography (listed below), the local history cards at the Newcastle Public Library, the Universities of New England and Newcastle, the Armidale College of Advanced Education, the Richmond River College of Advanced Education and the local history societies that exist in most towns.

Most of the historical research that has been done in Northern New South Wales is in unpublished thesis form or in local historical society publications. The Armidale and District Historical Society Journal and Proceedings is a particularly valuable starting point.
